Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Poll: 60 percent of Americans oppose Iraq war

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Sixty percent of Americans oppose the U.S. war in Iraq, the highest number since polling on the subject began with the commencement of the war in March 2003, according to poll results and trends released Wednesday.

And a majority of poll respondents said they would support the withdrawal of at least some U.S. troops by the end of the year, according to results from the Opinion Research Corporation poll conducted last week on behalf of CNN. The corporation polled 1,047 adult Americans by telephone.

According to trends, the number of poll respondents who said they did not support the Iraq war has steadily risen as the war stretched into a second and then a third year. In the most recent poll, 36 percent said they were in favor of the war — half of the peak of 72 percent who said they were in favor of the war as it began.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Blair warns Syria and Iran

LOS ANGELES - Delivering a major international policy address in California, British Prime Minister Tony Blair issued a stern warning Tuesday that Syria and Iran will face serious consequences if they continue working to destabilize the Middle East.

Without saying the two nations could face military action, Blair said: “We need to make it clear to Syria and Iran that there is a choice: come into the international community and play by the same rules as the rest of us - or be confronted.

“Their support of terrorism, their deliberate export of instability, their desire to see wrecked the democratic prospect in Iraq is utterly unjustifiable, dangerous and wrong,” the prime minister said in a speech to the Los Angeles World Affairs Council. “If they keep raising the stakes, they will find they have miscalculated.”

Meanwhile, Blair heaped blame on Iran- and Syria-backed Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon and other Islamic extremists, saying their incursions into Israel were part of a calculated campaign to provoke a massive Israeli military response. The idea, Blair said, was to leave the world with images of gutted Lebanese cities to stir outrage - thus drowning out moderate Muslim voices and exploiting the tragedy to spread an “arc of extremism” across the Middle East.

Israeli forces have seized several Hezbollah fighters in an airborne raid on Baalbek, a stronghold of the group in east Lebanon, the Israeli army says.

After heavy air strikes on the area, an Israeli helicopter landed and clashes broke out with Hezbollah fighters, according to local reports.

At least seven people died in the raid, several in one house, witnesses said.

Israeli forces have also pushed deeper into south Lebanon aiming to set up what Israel dubs a “security zone”.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : US soldiers charged with murder in Iraq in court (3 male prisoners)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A military court opened a preliminary hearing in Baghdad on Tuesday to determine whether four U.S. soldiers charged over the deaths of three male prisoners in Iraq will face court martials.

They have already been charged with murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, communicating a threat, and obstructing justice in the killings in or around May 9 north of Baghdad.

The Article 32 hearing comes at a sensitive time when the military is investigating other cases of alleged abuses, including the killings of up to 24 unarmed civilians in the town of Haditha last year by U.S. Marines.

The soldiers — Private First Class Corey Clagett, Specialist William Hunsaker, Staff Sargeant Raymond Girouard and Specialist Juston Graber — are from the 101st Airborne Division and were based in Samarra, north of Baghdad.

They have said the three men who were killed were trying to escape during the shootings near Lake Thar Thar.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : White House Ready To Help Cuba

WASHINGTON - With Cuban President Fidel Castro ailing, the Bush administration said the United States is prepared to support a democratic transition on the island….

White House press secretary Tony Snow said there are no plans to reach out to Raul Castro.

Raul Castro’s attempt to impose himself on the Cuban people is much the same as what his brother did,” Snow said. “The one thing that this president has talked about from the very beginning is his hope for the Cuban people, finally, to enjoy the fruits of freedom and democracy.”…

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Thousands of Shiites march in Baghdad

By Omar al-Ibadi and Michael Georgy

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Thousands of Shi’ite civilians charged with guarding neighborhoods in Iraq marched through Baghdad on Wednesday in a show of force likely to stir passions in a country ravaged by sectarian violence.

Young men in civilian uniforms and headbands, all members of what is known as the popular committees, chanted as a speaker called on them to crush “terrorists” and loyalists of ousted President Saddam Hussein leading a Sunni Arab insurgency against the Shi’ite-led government.

“Step on terrorism,” he said.

The crowd included members of the Badr Organization, one of the armed Shi’ite groups Sunni Arabs accuse of running militia death squads, a charge they deny.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, whose reconciliation plan has failed to ease sectarian bloodshed, has promised to disband militias that many fear will push the country to civil war.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Bush physical (results): Fit but heavier

WASHINGTON –President Bush says his annual physical shows him in fine shape — though he’s a little upset about those extra five pounds he’s packed on.

Snow said the president’s resting heart rate was 46, similar to the 47 at his exam last July and in the range of a well-trained athlete, and that his total cholesterol of 174 was his best ever. Below 200 is a desirable cholesterol level, and Bush’s was 178 last year.

A December 2004 physical showed Bush, who is nearly 6 feet tall, had gained six pounds since the summer of 2003 — a development he blamed on eating too many doughnuts during his re-election campaign. The gain prompted Bush, an avid mountain bike rider, to a renewed commitment to exercise and fitness. He was rewarded last July with a loss of eight pounds to weigh 191.6 pounds.

Then came this year’s addition.
