Stop Bush - Anti Bush : US raids in Iraq generate questions, resentment (More US slaughter)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Issam Hamza and his son Ahmed were killed in their Baghdad home by U.S. troops who say the men ignored shouted orders during the arrest of an al Qaeda suspect. Relatives said they were simply panicked by the night-time raid.

….

The family say they were woken by blasts, gathered in a hallway, and then noticed red laser dots on the walls from the U.S. soldiers’ rifle sights as the raid got under way.

Hamza’s daughter Sarah said the retired pharmacist’s assistant stood up and walked to the hall door near his bedroom.

“Suddenly he shouted and returned to us holding his left side and fell to the ground,” she said.

Sarah said her sisters were trying to staunch the bleeding when U.S. soldiers outside demanded a locked door to the house be opened. Her brother Ahmed moved to look for the keys.

“Once he reached the television table he was shot in the head from the window and fell to the ground,” she said.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : US Marine exonerated for song about killing Iraqis

WASHINGTON, June 27 (Reuters) - The U.S. military will not punish a Marine who performed an obscenity-laced song to a laughing and cheering crowd of fellow troops in Iraq making light of killing Iraqis, the Marine Corps said on Tuesday.

The Marines two weeks ago launched a preliminary inquiry into whether Cpl. Joshua Belile, who returned home from Iraq in March, violated military law or rules in singing the song, a four-minute video of which was posted on the Internet.

In the song, titled “hadji girl,” Belile sang to fellow troops at a base in Iraq about encountering an Iraqi woman and her family.

“I grabbed her little sister and put her in front of me. As the bullets began to fly, the blood sprayed from between her eyes, and then I laughed maniacally,” he sang. Laughing, clapping and cheers can be heard in the background.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Majority of Americans want withdrawal plan for Iraq (USA TODAY/Gallup)

WASHINGTON — A clear majority of Americans say Congress should pass a resolution that outlines a plan for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq, according to a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken Friday through Sunday. Half of those surveyed would like all U.S. forces out of Iraq within 12 months.

The poll finds support for the ideas behind Democratic proposals that were soundly defeated in the Senate last week. An uptick in optimism toward the war after the killing of terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi earlier this month seems to have evaporated.

Bush’s approval rating is at 37%. After hitting the low point of his presidency at 31% in May, it had risen to 38% in early June. His standing, which slipped below 40% in February, hasn’t rebounded above that level since then.

The percentage of Americans who say the president has “a clear plan for handling the situation in Iraq” has dropped to 31%, a new low. That’s still higher than the 25% who say congressional Democrats have a clear plan for Iraq.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : (Hillary) Clinton: Democrats ’struggling’ with Iraq

WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton conceded Friday the Democrats are “openly struggling with a lot of the difficult issues,” but said that was better than the GOP’s “hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.”

The senator and potential presidential candidate said the Democrats’ debate a day earlier on the Senate floor about war policy in Iraq was actually a sign of party strength, not weakness.

“Although unity is important it is not the most important value. It is, I think, a tribute to the Democratic Party at this moment in time that we are honestly and openly struggling with a lot of the difficult issues facing our country,” Clinton, D-N.Y., told the New Democrat Network.

On the issue of Iraq, Clinton has been buffeted by competing forces within her party. Many elements of the party’s liberal base want an immediate or timed withdrawal of troops from Iraq, while others feel such a position may weaken the party’s electoral chances this year and in 2008.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : U.S. military confirms plan to reduce troops

U.S. government officials confirmed on Saturday that Army Gen. George Casey has submitted an early draft of a plan to withdraw roughly 28,000 combat troops from Iraq by the end of 2007. But the officials emphasize that the plan is conditional on the security situation on the ground in Iraq.

The total number of forces that could possibly be withdrawn under this plan would be larger than the 28,000 combat forces because as the number of combat troops is reduced, an undetermined number of support elements could also be withdrawn.

Military official acknowledge that the New York Times’ story reflects more of the political reality here at home than the security situation on the ground in Iraq.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Murtha speaks out against permanent bases in Iraq

MIAMI - American presence in Iraq is more dangerous to world peace than nuclear threats from North Korea or Iran, Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., said to a crowd of more than 200 in North Miami Saturday afternoon.

A former Marine and a prominent critic of the Bush administration’s policies in Iraq, Murtha reiterated his views that the war cannot be won militarily and needs political solutions. He said the more than 100,000 troops in Iraq should be pulled out immediately, and deployed to peripheral countries like Kuwait.

“We do not want permanent bases in Iraq,” Murtha told the audience. “We want as many Americans out of there as possible.”

Murtha also has publicly said that the shooting of 24 Iraqis in November at Haditha, a city in the Anbar province of western Iraq that has been plagued by insurgents, was wrongfully covered up.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : US troops kill fewer Iraqis after new guidelines (Reuters)

Sun Jun 25, 2006 11:57 AM ET

By Alastair Macdonald

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. troops have reduced the number of Iraqi civilians they kill after orders to improve checkpoint procedures following the shootings of some 350 Iraqis in such incidents last year, the military said on Sunday.

Figures in a briefing document provided by a U.S. spokesman in Baghdad showed that seven Iraqi civilians a week on average were reported killed in “escalation of force” (EOF) incidents in 2005. That dropped to four a week in January to one a week now.

“Just last week, 11-17 June, we had approximately 50 escalation of force incidents with only one injury in the entire country, just about the lowest level since we started tracking these incidents,” Lieutenant Colonel Michelle Martin-Hing wrote.

U.S. officers had previously insisted in response to queries that no such statistics were compiled, although Martin-Hing said commanders began tracking such incidents in July last year.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Pentagon Report Details Abuse of Iraqi Detainees

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. special operations forces fed some Iraqi detainees only bread and water for up to 17 days, used unapproved interrogation practices such as sleep deprivation and loud music, and stripped at least one prisoner, according to a Pentagon report on incidents dating to 2003 and 2004.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Reuters Iraq attacks kill 43

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A series of bombs killed at least 43 people in and near Baghdad on Saturday, police said, in one of the bloodiest days in
Iraq since a U.S. military air strike killed Abu Musab al-Zarqawi 10 days ago.

The violence, a day after a suicide bomber killed 10 people in a Baghdad Shi’ite mosque, came despite a security crackdown in the Iraqi capital and followed a vow by al Qaeda’s new leader in Iraq to avenge the death of his predecessor on June 7.

The attacks, which included at least four Baghdad car bombs, posed a fresh challenge to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who is under pressure to ease a violence that has killed thousands of Iraqis and complicated plans for a U.S. troop withdrawal.

In the deadliest attack, a car bomb struck an Iraqi police checkpoint in a Shi’ite area southwest of Baghdad, killing at least 12 people and wounding 38, police said.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Bush spokesman calls 2,500 war dead a ’sad benchmark’

WHITE HOUSE — “It’s a number.” That’s the reaction from White House press secretary Tony Snow to word that 2,500 American soldiers have died since the Iraq war began.

The sobering number comes from the Pentagon. Officials didn’t say who the 2,500th victim was or where or when the death occurred.

Calling it a “sad benchmark,” Snow says President Bush “very deeply” feels the pain of those families. But he’s reiterating Bush’s insistence that those sacrifices won’t be in vain.

The military also says nearly 18,500 troops have been wounded in action since the US invaded Iraq in March of 2003. Of those, more than 45 percent never returned to duty.
