Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Bush: Dems Have Become Obstructionists

President Bush counterpunched at Democrats on Thursday, saying their criticism of the war in Iraq has turned their party into one of “cut-and-run” obstructionists.

At a GOP fundraiser, Bush accused Democrats of using a new intelligence estimate that ties the war in Iraq to rising extremism to win votes in November.

“Five years after 9-11, Democrats offer nothing but criticism, and obstruction and endless second guessing,” Bush said. He said the Democratic Party - the party of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry Truman - has become the “party of cut-and-run.”

If Democrats really believe the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq has made America less safe, then they should make that case to the American people, Bush said.

“Saddam Hussein’s regime was a serious threat,” Bush said, adding that had he not been removed from power, the former Iraqi leader would still be killing innocent people, pursuing weapons of mass destruction and firing at U.S. pilots.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Rumsfeld Lashes Out at Bush’s Critics

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Tuesday accused critics of the Bush administration’s Iraq and counter-terrorism policies of trying to appease “a new type of fascism.”

In unusually explicit terms, Rumsfeld portrayed the administration’s critics as suffering from “moral and intellectual confusion” about what threatens the nation’s security and accused them of lacking the courage to fight back.

In remarks prepared for delivery to the American Legion’s national convention, Rumsfeld recited what he called the lessons of history, including the failed efforts to appease the Adolf Hitler regime in the 1930s.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Bush and Saddam Should Both Stand Trial, Says Nuremberg Prosecutor

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 25 (OneWorld) - A chief prosecutor of Nazi war crimes at Nuremberg has said George W. Bush should be tried for war crimes along with Saddam Hussein. Benjamin Ferenccz, who secured convictions for 22 Nazi officers for their work in orchestrating the death squads that killed more than 1 million people, told OneWorld both Bush and Saddam should be tried for starting “aggressive” wars–Saddam for his 1990 attack on Kuwait and Bush for his 2003 invasion of Iraq.

“Nuremberg declared that aggressive war is the supreme international crime,” the 87-year-old Ferenccz told OneWorld from his home in New York. He said the United Nations charter, which was written after the carnage of World War II, contains a provision that no nation can use armed force without the permission of the UN Security Council.

Ferenccz said that after Nuremberg the international community realized that every war results in violations by both sides, meaning the primary objective should be preventing any war from occurring in the first place.

He said the atrocities of the Iraq war–from the Abu Ghraib prison scandal and the massacre of dozens of civilians by U.S. forces in Haditha to the high number of civilian casualties caused by insurgent car bombs–were highly predictable at the start of the war.

“Every war will lead to attacks on civilians,” he said. “Crimes against humanity, destruction beyond the needs of military necessity, rape of civilians, plunder–that always happens in wartime. So my answer personally, after working for 60 years on this problem and who hates to see all these young people get killed no matter what their nationality, is that you’ve got to stop using warfare as a means of settling your disputes.”

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : CNN: Opposition to Iraq War at all time high

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Opposition among Americans to the war in Iraq has reached a new high, with only about a third of respondents saying they favor it, according to a poll released Monday.

Just 35 percent of 1,033 adults polled say they favor the war in Iraq; 61 percent say they oppose it — the highest opposition noted in any CNN poll since the conflict began more than three years ago.

A bare majority (51 percent) say they see Bush as a strong leader, but on most other attributes he gets negative marks.

Most Americans (54 percent) don’t consider him honest, most (54 percent) don’t think he shares their values and most (58 percent) say he does not inspire confidence.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : NYT: Bush Said to Be Frustrated by Level of Public Support in Iraq

President Bush made clear in a private meeting this week that he was concerned about the lack of progress in Iraq and frustrated that the new Iraqi government — and the Iraqi people — had not shown greater public support for the American mission, participants in the meeting said Tuesday.

“I sensed a frustration with the lack of progress on the bigger picture of Iraq generally — that we continue to lose a lot of lives, it continues to sap our budget,” said one person who attended the meeting. “The president wants the people in Iraq to get more on board to bring success.”

Another person who attended the session said he interpreted Mr. Bush’s comments less as an expression of frustration than as uncertainty over the prospects of the new Iraqi government. “He said he really didn’t quite have a sense yet of how effective the government was,” said this person, who, like several who discussed the session, agreed to speak only anonymously because it was a private lunch.

More generally, the participants said, the president expressed frustration that Iraqis had not come to appreciate the sacrifices the United States had made in Iraq, and was puzzled as to how a recent anti-American rally in support of Hezbollah in Baghdad could draw such a large crowd. “I do think he was frustrated about why 10,000 Shiites would go into the streets and demonstrate against the United States,” said another person who attended.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Bush says U.S. will be fighting terrorists for years

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush cautioned Tuesday that the foiled plot in Britain to blow up jetliners over the Atlantic means the U.S. will be fighting terrorists for years to come.

America is safer than it has been, yet it is not yet safe,” Bush told reporters in an operations center at the National Counterterrorism Center in McLean, Va., just outside Washington.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Poll: Terror Concerns Increase (64% Say Attack In U.S. Likely)

(CBS) Last week’s foiled terror plot in Britain has made the threat of airborne terrorism once again prevalent in the minds of the American public, a CBS News poll finds.

While the war in Iraq remains the number one problem facing the country, terrorism has risen to the number two concern, according to 17 percent of the respondents, up from just 7 percent last month.

And more Americans now expect a terrorist attack in the U.S. in the near future, despite the administration’s report that there is no sign of terrorist activity on U.S. soil.

Sixty-four percent said a terror attack on the U.S. is likely in the next few months, up 11 points from earlier this year.

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Poll: Bush may be hurting Republicans

WASHINGTON - Republicans determined to win in November are up against a troublesome trend — growing opposition to President Bush.

An Associated Press-Ipsos poll conducted this week found the president’s approval rating has dropped to 33 percent, matching his low in May. His handling of nearly every issue, from the Iraq war to foreign policy, contributed to the president’s decline around the nation, even in the Republican-friendly South.

More sobering for the GOP are the number of voters who backed Bush in 2004 who are ready to vote Democratic in the fall’s congressional elections — 19 percent. These one-time Bush voters are more likely to be female, self-described moderates, low- to middle-income and from the Northeast and Midwest.

Two years after giving the Republican president another term, more than half of these voters — 57 percent — disapprove of the job Bush is doing.

“The numbers … are similar to what I’m hearing out in the streets,” said Democrat Ed Perlmutter, a primary winner Tuesday in a competitive House race in Colorado. “I talked to so many people and they’ve had enough and want to see a change.”

Stop Bush - Anti Bush : Suicide Bomber Kills 33 in Southern Iraq

A suicide bomber detonated a belt of explosives on his body near a highly revered Shiite shrine in southern Iraq Thursday, killing at least 33 people and injuring 108, an official said.

The bomber blew himself up while being patted down by policemen near the Imam Ali mosque in the Shiite holy city of Najaf, said Dr. Munthir al-Ithari, the head of Najaf’s health directorate. He said one Iranian woman was among the 33 dead and nine Iranians among the 108 injured.

“We hold Takfiris (Sunni extremists) and Saddamists directly responsible for this horrible crime … at the same time we hold those who embrace terrorism in Iraq and the countries supporting it as responsible,” the statement said.

It was the worst attack in the twin cities of Najaf and Kut since the July 18 bombing of another Shiite shrine in Kut that killed 53 people. That attack was claimed by a group affiliated with al-Qaida.
